The Beginning of a Friendship
Lucy was a shy and frightened litte girl when she first stood in front of Mrs. Campbell’s third-grade class. It was Monday. The teacher pointed to a two-student desk that was empty and told her to sit there.
Lucy walked over to her desk carefully. However, her books fell on the floor. Some of the kids in the class laughed because that’s the way some kids were. Lucy picked up her books and sat down alone. She was the only one without a desk partner. No one knew who she was. She was very lonely, and afraid to make friends with anyone.
Every time she heard the other students talking and laughing, she felt her heart break. She couldn’t talk to anyone about her problem, and she didn’t want her parents to worry about her.
Then one day, something different happened. The teacher said, “Class, this week we are very lucky to have another new student, Henry.” The little boy came over and put his book bag on Lucy’s desk. He looked at her, smiled at her. It was a shy kind of smile, but it was a nice smile. She smiled back.
When lunch time came, Lucy sat on the bench under the big tree eating her butter sandwich. She didn’t feel like crying. She was looking for Henry. There he was playing ball with some boys. Henry made friends quickly, it seemed. Then he looked over at Lucy and saw her looking at him. Shyly, she looked down, but when she looked up again, there was Henry standing right in front of her, his lunch bag in his hand. “Can I sit on this bench with you?” he asked. She nodded. For a few minutes they didn’t talk at all. But right away Lucy knew she had a friend. Henry was nice. Some kids were just that way…

After I had finished my university studies, I decided to work for Asia Hope, a charity institution(慈善机构) that helps children. I did a business course when I was at university and during my four years there, I was active in raising money for charity. I worked on several big charity projects(方案) at university and one year, my team and I managed to raise over $200,000 for Oxfam and Asia Hope.
I decided to work with Asia Hope because it offers many different kinds of work and it allows people to choose the projects they want to work on. Since my university course was in business, I decided that I would be best at helping the institution to raise money. On joining the Donations and Fundraising Department, I met many people and I learnt a lot in a short time. The work was hard and the hours were long. We had to get to the office by 7:30 every morning and we usually worked until late at night. Asia Hope is quite a new institution; many people have not heard of it yet. Asking people to give money to an institution they have not heard of is hard work, and quite often, people are very unfriendly when I speak to them on the phone.
However, there are still some good points about the job. For example, I enjoy going out to meet people, especially important business people. I like talking to them and telling them about the good work done by Asia Hope. I explain how their money is used, and they are usually very kind and give a lot.
I am not sure if I will still be doing this ten years from now but what I do know is that I love my work at the moment, and I know that I am doing my bit to help the world. 50. What does Asia Hope do?
A. Help children. B. Help businessmen. C. Develop business course. D. Do university research. 51. Why did the writer want to work for Asia Hope? A. Because she liked children very much. B. Because it could improve her business.
C. Because she raised money for it at university.
D. Because she could choose the projects she wanted.
52. According to the writer, which of the following is the good point about the job? A. She can start work early. B. She can go out to meet people.
C. Asia Hope is a new institution. D. She doesn’t have to work for long hours. 53. What can we infer from the passage? A. People are unfriendly to the writer.
B. The writer is not happy with her work now.
C. The writer may not work for Asia Hope in ten years.

People didn’t use to throw things away. They used to(过去常)mend their clothes and

reused them until they wore out. When they bought things, they used to carry shopping baskets. But now we don’t reuse things well and more rubbish has been produced. We throw away 25 million tones of waste in our dustbins (垃圾箱) every year. That means one family throw away about one thousand kilos of waste.
We have a strong reason to take it as a serious problem! The fact is that lots of rubbish we throw away could be reused or recycled . The so-called (所谓的)rubbish isn’t real rubbish.
The UK is one of the worst recyclers in Europe. In other words, in the UK they’re recycling only about 8% of their everyday waste. That’s much less than many other countries. Germany recycles 10%, while Japan recycles 40%. The government has set a goal of recycling 30% of their everyday waste by the year 2010. But it looks that it is not easy to reach it. As we know, some habits are difficult to change and some collection plans are expensive to carry out.
At present, the movement called Recycle Now in the UK tries to change that situation. The Top designer (设计师)Oliver Heath is a strong fan of the movement. In 2005 he designed the first home built completely from recycled things, including metal cans and glass bottles. “It always makes me excited when I make good use of those recycled things,” he said, “Maybe in the near future, you can also make something from recycled computer printers, plastic bags, bottle tops or CDs.” When his story was reported on TV, more and more people begin to try his ideas.
Some local governments have set up recycling centres where it’s easy for families to take their empty bottles and old newspapers. Instead of throwing away the so-called rubbish, some families start doing more about it.
With the effort of the whole country, we are happy to see some progress in some places in the UK.
17. Do people produce more rubbish than before?
18. Why does the writer think rubbish is a serious problem? 19. Which country recycles more than 10%, Germany or Japan?
20. How does Oliver Heath feel when he turns recycled things into something useful? 21. What conclusion (结论) can you get about the recycling work in the UK?
