The Chinese believe that gardens are a serious form of art. Like painting, sculpture and poetry, gardens are designed to achieve balance, harmony, proportion and diversity. Chinese gardens are divided into three categories: Royal Gardens, private gardens and natural scenic spots.

The earliest royal garden garden can be traced back to the late Shang Dynasty (B.C.), when a royal hunting ground was built, followed by the Shanglin garden built by the first emperor of Qin Dynasty in Xianyang, the capital city. The latter was completed by Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty (BC), which is considered as the basis for designing the summer palace. The first private garden, also known as the literati garden, appeared in the northern and Southern Dynasties.
