The new equipment is so much better than that people can take more risks without getting hurt,” an athlete adds. “Sure there’s a risk. China declares day of mourning August 14 ,2010, 6:26 pm
ZHOUQU, China ( AP ) ----China declared a national day of mourning for victims of a massive landslide in the remote northwest, as authorities on Saturday stressed the importance of hygiene (卫生) and safety for the thousands now living in temporary shelters.
Chinese flags across the country and at embassies and consulates ( 领事馆) overseas will be lowered to half—staff on Sunday to commemorate the 1,156 killed in the landslide last weekend, the central government said on its website Saturday.
Public entertainment activities should also be suspended (暂时取消) for the day. The mourning periods in the past have banned things such as online video games and light—hearted television programs and forced cinemas, theatres and nightclubs to suspend business.
Rainstorms forecast for the coming days remained a threat to Zhouqu, where soldiers worked around the clock to remove debris from the swollen Bailong River that runs through the centre of town. More rain could cause the river to overflow and further inundate (浸水;泛滥) the town that is already one-third underwater after being swallowed in waves of mud and rubble---strewn water a week ago.
Authorities said 588 people remained missing. Clean drinking water was a primary concern, with most local sources knocked out or too polluted to use. State media reported cases of dysentery(痢疾), but there were no reports of an epidemic(流行性) outbreak.

As a child, Jules Verne grew up in Nantes, a small town in France. He ran away once as a child and came upon a small boy that was crying. The boy told him that he had to leave his family on a ship, but he didn’t want to. So Jules Verne took his place on the ship. He was glad he was going to explore the world, but his father caught up with the ship before it got very far and took him home to punish him. After that Jules Verne said he would only travel in his imagination, and he did.
Jules Verne wanted to be a writer and wanted to write plays very much. As a young man he went to Paris and hung out at the local theatres and soon became friends with all the play writers there. That’s how he met Alexander Dumas, who wrote adventure stories that interested Jules Verne very much. Jules Verne decided to write one of his own, an adventure about the ever so popular hot air balloon trips of the time.
Success was not easy for him, though. He didn’t know much about science and he had a wife and two children to take care of. So he would wake up early each morning and do work and research before he went to work to support his family. Once he felt he knew enough about science he began to write his story in the morning. Luckily, his book was finally published by a person named Hetzel.
Jules Verne was the first to write a believable story about a person to the moon. Jules Verne used his knowledge of science to write a book about it. After Jules Verne died in 1905, other authors started writing about space. Children would read Jules Verne’s books and dream of growing up to build rockets. Because of Jules Verne’s books, the dream of the moon was reached. 68. What’s the purpose of this passage?

My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and announced:“Get up. You’re going with me to cut grass.” The idea that my father actually thought I was big enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and excited. From sunup to sundown my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large yards in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was tired out, but I felt good. I had put in a hard day’s labor and had earned ﹩ 6.
One day my father found some leaves I’d missed and pulled me aside. “Clear away these leaves.” He said firmly. “ and don’t make me have to do it again.” The message was clear. Today I value the importance of doing a job right in the first time. It will never fail to impress the person you are working for.
After two years my father told me and my brother that he felt we were old enough to do lawns (草坪) on our own. Every Saturday during our last two years of high school, we set out early in the morning with the same desire and drove what we had gained while working under our father.
Taking care of lawns was not exciting or high-paying, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job is a good job and that whatever I was paid was more than I had before.
A newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live on a fort-hour-a-week minimum (最低的) pay. “My father never worked just forty hours a week, and neither have I,” I replied. “If you’re only working forty hours, you probably don’t want to do any better than you’re doing.”
In every job I’ve held from doing lawns to washing dishes, I have learned something that helped me in my next job. If you look hard enough, you can learn from any job you do. 72. Why did the writer feel proud and excited when asked to cut grass? A. He was old enough to help his family. B. He became important to his father’s business. C. He was able to take care of large yards.
D. He could earn﹩ 6 that day.
73. What does message in the third paragraph mean? A. Leaving leaves behind is not right.
B. Giving no excuse for your mistakes. C. Doing a good job at the very beginning. D. Missing things can be found out.
74. Which of the following is the most thing that the writer has learned from his father?
A. Watch clearly while doing a job. B. Set out early for physical work. C. Keep learning from any job you hold. D. Work over 40 hours every week.
75. Why did the father ask him to get up early to cut grass?
A. Because he is big enough.
B. Because it was good for his future job. C. Because his father was old enough.
D. Because he must learn to work for the family. 第四部分 任务型阅读 (每空 1 分,满分 10 分)
You can usually tell when people are afraid just by the look on their faces. Mice can tell when other mice are afraid too. But instead of using their little eyes to sense each other’s fear, they use their pink little noses.
Scientists are beginning to understand how mice sense fear. According to the latest findings of a new study, mice smell fear from other mice using a structure called the Grueneberg ganglion(神经节), which sits inside the tip of their noses. The ganglion has about 500 nerve cells that carry messages between a mouse’s nose and brain.
Researchers already knew that this structure sends messages to the part of the brain that figures out how things smell. To study the function of the ganglion further, scientists from Switzerland used highly
detailed microscopes to analyze the ganglion in fine detail. Based on what they saw, the Swiss scientists began to
find that the structure discovers a certain kind of pheromone (信息素) called alarm pheromones which mice release (释放) when they’re afraid or in danger.
To test their theory, the researchers collected alarm chemicals from mice that had met with a poison—carbon dioxide—and were now dying. Then, the scientists exposed (使暴露) living mice to these chemical warning signals. They found cells in the ganglia of the living mice became active. At the same time, these mice began acting fearfully: They ran away from a tray of water that contained alarm pheromones and froze in the corner.
The researchers conducted the same experiment with mice whose ganglia had been surgically removed. When exposed to alarm pheromones, these mice continued exploring as usual. Without the ganglion, they couldn’t smell fear. Their sense of smell wasn’t completely ruined, however. Tests showed that they were able to smell a hidden cookie. So it’s clear that mice have a much more fine-tuned (细腻的) ability to sense chemicals in the air than humans.
