Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breafast is essential to one's life. Eating breafast at the start of the day, we have been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip.
But for many people, the thought of food as the first thing in the morning is never a pleasure. So in spite of all the efforts, they still tae no breafast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures could be obtained, the number of people who didn’t have breafast increased by 33%—from 8.8 million to 11.7 million—according to the Chicago-based Maret Research Corporation of America.
For those who dislie eating breafast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years have shown that, for grown-ups especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breafast. “Going without breafast does not affect wor,” said Arnold E. Bender, former professor of nutrition at Queen Eliabeth College in London, “nor does giving people breafast improve wor.”
Scientific evidence lining breafast to better health or better wor is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent wor involves children, not grown-ups. “The literature,” says one researcher, Dr Earnest Polite at the University of Teas, “is poor.” True or False
41. Generations of Americans have been educated since childhood that they can’t live without a good breafast.
42. People have been told eating breafast before at the beginning of the day is as important as putting oil in the family car before a trip.
43. People mae efforts not to have breafast.
44. Several studies in the last few years show that having breafast maes adults perform better. 45. There is little in between breafast and better health or better performance.

The world\"s first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looing for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages (the tais of those days) to get around. The city officials were interested in trying to mae it possible for worers to live outside of London and travel easily to wor each day.
If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to get to and from wor, they would move their homes outside of the city. This would help solve the problem of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway
5
system, was born.
The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the first trac was opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the first underground trac which was si ilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30 000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats
(standing up while the train was moving was not allowed) and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars.
However, the smoe from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot, as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to eep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding the Underground did become popular. It carried nine million riders in its first year.
Modem subways have come a long way since the early days of the London Underground. Today there are 94 large underground rapid transit systems around the world. The busiest of these subway systems is the Toyo Metro which opened in 1927. This efficient subway has two billion riders per year, and \"pushers\" wor
on the platforms (站台) during busy traffic hours to help push riders onto trains. At times, subway cars have been paced with up to 300 people! Shopping malls built in high traffic stations where riders move from one train to another have also helped the popularity of subways in Toyo. Many stations include underground
department stores, supermarets, restaurants, and specialty shops. Shoppers never have to go above ground! Questions
1. Why did British government want to build the London Underground? 2. When and where was the world’s first subway built?
3. There were about 3000people on the subway the first day, weren’t there? 4. Could riders stand up while the train was moving in 1863? 5. What do “pushers” do in the Toyo Metro? 1.
