Internet is playing a more important role in our life. We work with it, giving and receiving orders; we communicate with it, through e-mail, on-line phone, or MSN; we entertain with it, playing games, watching movies, and enjoy music; we study with it, looking for and exchanging information; we live with it, doing shopping and banking. Besides, we can log on to the internet on campus, in a bar, at home, or in a hotel, almost anywhere anytime.
However, if we want to enjoy the service, we have to register with many websites, typing in our name, age, gender, address, and telephone number. And these become part of contents stored on-line. With the “professional” hackers, despiteful and harmless, as well as irresponsible wedsite administrators, the information might be stolen and made open and even sold. A case in point is the junk mails. A better example is the privacy of pop stars.
As a result, while enjoying the great convenience and speed of internet, we are called sometimes by strangers, visited by promotions and junk ads, and cheated by someone unexpectedly. Therefore, think twice before deciding to register on-line.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Overseas Study
The discussion about overseas study has never stopped in the past few years. Let’s have a look at its advantages and disadvantages before drawing the final conclusion.
The biggest advantage of studying overseas is the higher academic level and advanced research facilities. What’s more, by understanding a new culture and meeting different people, they can develop amore reasonable and balanced view towards the world. Last but not least, the experience will be invaluable to character building, which makes most students more independents, diligent and enterprising.
However, the negative effects are also obvious, To begin with, if a person does not make full preparation before going abroad, he will have great difficulty adapting to the new environment, In the second place, the cultural difference will hinder the regular life in many ways. Finally, money is always a big problem. Many students have to find part-time jobs to earn money to pay tuition and fees.
In conclusion, the advantages of overseas study outweigh disadvantages. Once they return home, the overseas students will great contribution to our motherland.
My view on opportunity
Different people have different view on opportunity. Some people think that there are few opportunities in the world, while others argue that everybody will have some kind of opportunity along his life route.
As far as I am concerned , I agree with the latter opinion. For one thing, I firmly believe opportunities are everywhere around us. No one will be unlucky enough to have no opportunities all the time, because “Every dog has his day ”. For another , since opportunities are transient, we have to make good preparation and improve ourselves. Just think of Newton, who discovered the Law of Gravity when many people had watched an apple falling ahead of them.
Taking all these factors into consideration, we may safely come to the conclusion that there are quite a few opportunities in our society. Only if we get prepared can we seize the opportunities instead of letting them slip by, just as the saying goes , “Opportunities are only for the prepared minds.”
Challenges of Environmental Issues
Environmental protection has aroused great concern among people. In many cities, especially in big populous cities, environmental pollution has become really serious. For example, an urban population of 12 million and 1.4 million vehicles in Beijing puts great pressure on resources and the environment, the underground water level in Beijing has continued to decrease in recent years due to excessive use. Coal burning, exhaust emissions from vehicles and factories also intensify the city’s environmental problems. We have to pay the historical debts we owe to the environment because of early rapid economic development.
However, pollution control does not have to hinder economic development. In a sense, it is a stimulation to the economy because pollution controls motivate enterprises to aim for higher industrial standards and start a material and resource efficient prodution. The exhaust control on vehicles can be cited as an example. Some municipal governments require that level in vehicle emissions be controlled to reduce air pollution. Unleaded gasoline has also been promoted during the past year. As a result, automobile and chemical factories have to enhance their production technology to meet the demand.
Now some municipal government have also taken such measures to stop the pollution as replacing coal with natural gas, reducing dust and deforestation to improve the lives of residents. In Beijing, 30 per cent of fuel used in urban centers will come from natural gas. Low sulfur coal is replacing high sulfur coal for factories. Many small boilers and kitchen ranges in restaurants and dining halls have been replaced by gas ovens.
As we can see that the measures have been effectively combating pollution. The air sulfur dioxide density has been on the decline since this year, and the density of total suspended particles and carbon monoxide has been kept on the same level as last year. Though the density of nitrogen oxides continues to increase because of the rising of the number of automobiles, the degree of growth has been reduced.
Despite the progress some big cities have achieved in improving the local environment, we believe that big city planners should adopt a comprehensive environmental policy, which is more important than the detailed measures and achievement.
Cherish Every Minute on Campus
In recent years, the problem of college students’ wasting time has become increasingly serious on university campuses and more people voice growing concern over it.
Such a phenomenon has brought many unfavorable consequences. To begin with, parents are the direct victims, because children’s wasting time on campus means that parents’ wishes may never be fulfilled in the future. What’s more, it is extremely harmful to students themselves in that they may lose the best opportunity lay a solid foundation for tomorrow’s career. Last but least, an unhealthy atmosphere will come into being in universities as wasting time becomes more and more common, which, obviously, goes against the aim of university education directly.
It is more than necessary that all of us joined in the efforts to fight this notorious phenomenon. As to me, I am determined to make an all-around plan and strictly carry it out in order to live a happy and fruitful life on campus. Moreover, I will try to consult teachers and peers so as to be more reasonable and enterprising. Only when every one of us realizes the importance of time can we put an end to the adverse trend.
Online job-seeking
Nowadays, in an area of information and technology, job applicants have easy access to online job-seeking. The choices are numerous on the Internet.
As for such a question, different people hold different opinions. Some believe that online job-seeking is both economical and efficient. Because people can just stay home, searching for information about the ideal occupations and sending application letters. There is an opposite voice, however, which claims the disadvantages also exist. For example, some applicants often exaggerate their working experience or even lie about their diplomas. At the same time, many applicants are trapped by some enterprises who offer false information.
As far as I am concerned, I hold the belief that we should deal with the issue cautiously and that a face-to –face interview is necessary in spite of the advantages of online job-seeking. After all, face-to-face communication are direct and efficient means for the employers as well as the applicants to understand each other.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Fast Food
The discussion about fast food has never stopped in the past few years. Let us have a look at its advantages and disadvantages before drawing the final conclusion.
The biggest advantage of fast food is its convenience for customers. You go into a fast food restaurant, order your food, and your food gets ready in a minute. Therefore, you can save a lot of time. What’s more, the environment of fast food restaurants is both clean and comfortable. Last but not least, it has excellent service, and the quality of food is guaranteed.
However, the negative effects are also obvious. To begin with, in terms of nutrition, fast food is far from satisfactory. Fast food always contains more meat and butter and much less vegetable. It doesn’t compose a balanced diet and it is low in nutrition, thus eating fast food will result in some diseases in the long term. In the second place, although cooking at home is time-consuming and tiresome, it provides us more opportunities of cooperation and communication with family members and friends.
Up till now, we can see it clearly that fast food is not beneficial or harmful in itself. The key lies in the user so long as we can make properly use of it, it can be most helpful to us in many respects.
My View on Early Schooling
Nowadays, there is a growing tendency for children to attend school at a very early age, especially for the sake of early intelligence development. Personally speaking, I do not agree with this practice at all.
First of all, a child grows up under a certain pattern, and it is harmful for him to go to school earlier, especially bad for his mental and physical growth. In reality, he will feel it difficult to keep up with his peers. Secondly, the younger child is always in an inferior position in comparison with other classmates, and he is more likely to be bullied by older students. Last but not least, it is much more difficult for this child to make friends, which will inevitably hinder his personality development.
To wind up my discussion, my conclusion is that it is not advisable for children to go to school too earlier. For both the mental and physical health of children, the age of seven is a good choice.
Relationship between Major and Future Job
It’s a striking fact that there isn’t necessary relationship between one’s major and specific job duties for the majority of people. Many people condemn this on outdated education system and some even complain that textbooks are useless.
This phenomenon exists for a number of reasons. First of all, it’s a common sense that there always exists a gap between theory and practice. This gap needs to be bridged by continuous exploration of similarities and differences between these two factors and accordingly corresponding modification. Secondly, due to the rapid development of technology, the knowledge from textbooks becomes the times soon. And it will lead to the disassociation between what one has acquired in college education and what he does at work.
From my point of view, when faced with the disassociation, one should adapt himself to working environment as soon as possible by adjusting his own information system. What’s more important, life-long learning is essential to one’s career success. Even after one reached the required levels from college education curriculum, pursuit of knowledge should never be ceased. Last but not the least, we should bear this firmly in mind that one’s ability is valued much more than one’s academic degree.
Test Scores
In current society, we come across too many people who put too much emphasis on test scores. In many cases, the examination score has become the sole criterion for judging a person, deciding whether he will enter a university, obtain a degree or get a job.
I agree that we should not put too much emphasis on test scores. To begin with, we should not take it for granted that those who score high in tests will naturally do will in practical work. Moreover, in universities and colleges, teachers are busy making up tests and tutoring students while students are busy preparing for all kinds of tests, completely forgetting their overall personality development. What worries me most is that there are more and more ringers, who take the place of others in the examinations for money or the so-called “friendship”.
All that has been discussed above points to the fact that if we want to evaluate a person objectively, we should not only find out his test scores but also his practical ability.
My View on Bank Loan
It becomes a common tendency these days for people to ask for bank loans to buy a house or a private car. Many people are opposed to this practice because they hold that bank loan is equal to debt, and they will always feel burden in the coming years. They also argue that they will not buy anything before they are capable of paying it in cash.
In my mind, however, I cannot agree with these people on this occasion. It takes many years for common citizens to earn enough money to buy a house or a car, and asking for a bank loan certainly shortens the distance between dream and reality. At the same time, it is not too difficult for people to pay back the money if they have normal jobs. In addition, applying for bank loans can often be a form of investment, which makes it possible for people to earn more money.
In conclusion, obtaining a bank loan will certainly do us good so long as we make it reasonable.
How to Improve Students’ Mental Health
As is known to all, our human health consists of two aspects – physical and mental health, and mental health is as important as physical health for a student during his growth. However, it is quite worrying that nowadays some students are not mentally healthy. The cases of suicide on campus reveal the importance of the issue.
The college and universities should be greatly responsible for caring students’ mental health during their school life. Firstly, the authorities concerned should enhance the awareness that mental fitness is vital to college students. Secondly, relevant courses and activities should be introduced to students so that they would learn to maintain and improve their mental health. Thirdly, there should be a psychological counseling hotline or office, even an online service for students to turn to when they need some psychological aid.
But the schools alone cannot insure the final success in improving students’ mental health, for students themselves should also take an active part in helping themselves. They should learn to be patient, understanding, and cooperative with others, and spend more of their efforts doing more meaningful things, such as study and sports.
How to Solve the Housing Problem in Big Cities
With the fast development of national economy, more and more people flood into big cities, which causes serious housing problem. If we ever want to solve this problem, the careful planning of the government and the cooperation of all the citizens are both needed.
On the one hand, the government should have an overall planning of urban development so that the reasonable and scientific disposition of every inch of land is at hand. Through turning the backward areas into advanced theme communities, we can significantly elevate the potential value of our land. On the other hand, the citizens should make great efforts to cooperate with the government by moving according to the overall planning, raising constructive suggestions or taking part in the actual construction.
All in all, only when the government and the citizens join their hands in the efforts can we hope to solve the housing problem satisfactorily.
How to Eliminate Cheating on Campus
Nowadays, instead of listening attentively in class and working hard after class, a number of students adopt all kinds of dishonest methods to get high scores in examinations. It has become such a serious problem that it has aroused the concern from the whole society.
To put an end to such a serious problem, in my mind, it calls for the efforts from all sides. First of all, the university authority should make it clear that any cheating behavior in the examinations, from whispering and copying, receiving answers via mobile phones to asking ringers for help, will be severely punished with no exception. Moreover, teachers of all subjects should go all the way to restore honesty by setting an example for the youth through speaking sincerely and behaving truthfully. Last but not least, young students, the future of our nation, should view integrity as the prerequisite to an upright and responsible citizen so as to learn to despise and fight against dishonest behaviors throughout the life.
How can anybody expect to lead a meaningful life if he is not far from any kind of cheating behaviors? Only when all of us join in the efforts of eliminate g cheating at all levels can we expect to have a cleaner society and a more beautiful future.
How I Finance My College Education
The past decade has witnessed a steady rise in university tuition and fees. Consequently students voice growing concern over how to finance their college education. To this problem, in my mind, there are at least the following three approaches.
First of all, the main financial support comes from parents and other family members. For all the years it is they who give the student courage and determination to hold on and excel. Secondly, the students can borrow money from the bank to support their college study, which has become convenient and rapid especially in recent years. Finally, doing part-time jobs is also a wise choice, in which the students can not only earn money, but also combine textbook knowledge with social experience.
Personally, I would like to choose the second method in my own practice. On the one hand, I don’t want to put too much burden on my retiring parents. On the other hand, I would like to concentrate on my studies and lay a solid foundation for future career. As long as I am sure of graduating from our university with distinction, it is out of question for me to pay back the money immediately after I step into the society and live on my own.
Laying-off
With the development of national economy, a worrying social problem also arises – more and more workers are laid off these years.
The laying-off phenomenon will bring many unfavorable consequences. First of foremost, the life of laid-off workers can be very difficult. What makes matters worse, some of them even lose hope of life. Finally, if this matter is not properly settled, it will pose a threat to national security.
It is high time that we called on the efforts from all sides to deal with this problem properly. For one thing, the government should create more job vacancies for those who have been laid off. For another, laid-off workers should seize every chance to begin a new career. Finally, the mass media should also play a positive role in helping laid-off workers find new posts.
No matter whether this problem is a natural result of social development, it is important that we find a satisfactory solution to it in this social transitional period.
Why I Take the College English Test Band 6
Some people think it is not necessary to take part in CET-6 because they have already obtained their degree with the certificate of CET-4. Deep in my heart, I also have been asking myself the same question again and again: Why do I take the College English Test Band 6? The reasons, in my mind, can be summed up in three respects.
First of all, after passing CET-4, I finished my initial-stage English education and had no more English classes. Consequently, I conducted all the English learning activities on my own, and it is time for me to examine my achievements. In the second place, the test is regarded as one of the most authoritative English tests available for us college students. If I can set my mind on this test and get a satisfactory score, I will feel most confident. Last but not least, the certificate is also a necessity for me to find a good job.
Such a test, I firmly believe, will help me embark on the right track of both English learning and my future life. Knowledge and experience accumulated can help me reap harvest in English learning, and confidence and courage gained along the route can help me succeed in my future career.
Why Are There So Many Rural Laborers in Big Cities
For a number of years, there has been a steady rise in the number of rural laborers who flood into big cities. Many men work on construction sites, while many women work as dishwashers in restaurants or babysitters for city dwellers. Three reasons, in my mind, can account for this social phenomenon.
First and foremost, the limited land can no longer produce enough crops for an ever-increasing rural population. In the second place, there are far more opportunities in big cities – rural laborers dream of earning money through hard work. Last but not least, many of them want to live permanently in big cities, because they admire the way of living there, and wish their children to receive good education.
I firmly believe that if we try our best to create a healthy social atmosphere, rural laborers will make greater contribution to our nation.
Practice Makes Perfect
The well-known proverb “Practice makes perfect” has long been accepted by all of us. It tells us that we have to practice again and again whenever we want to be an expert in a special field.
Let’s take English study as an example. If you want to enlarge your vocabulary, you have to understand English words in the context and then learn them by heart. It is also true with English writing. Listening to teachers attentively in class and reciting sample articles are far from necessary – you should practice writing every week and then ask teachers to go over it.
Another good case in point is skating. Nobody is born a good skater, and one can only become a skilled skater after countless falls and injuries. Every Chinese was excited when Yang Yang won the first Winter Olympics gold medal in Salt Lake City, but who knew what difficulties and hardships the girl had been gone through?
Judging from the examples given above, we may safely come to the conclusion that practice makes perfect. So why not put what you are learning into practice? I am sure you will become experienced and skillful if you keep on doing it.
My view on college students’ taking part-time jobs
Nowadays more and more people voice growing concern over college student’s taking part-time jobs. Some people argue that it is unquestionably beneficial to the students in that it can enlarge their horizon and enrich their experience, while others firmly hold that part-time jobs of all kinds are harmful so as to hinder the student’s normal college study.
Personally ,I think this question should be probed in depth. On the one hand , the first group is not totally correct because not all part-time jobs are beneficial and not harmful. Student are somewhat immature and easily led astray by those money-addicted employers. On the other hand, the second opinion seems not so satisfactory because we also witness successful examples in universities home and abroad. Early working experience can be invaluable as the preparation for future career.
From what has been discussed above, we can see clearly that key lies in whether the student is able to strike a successful balance between work and study. Otherwise, the college life will be caught in the so-called vicious circle no matter whether the student takes part-time jobs or not.

Students’ Use of Computers
From the chart we can see clearly that the average number of hours a student spends on the computer per week has increased from less than two hours in 1990 to nearly four hours in 1995, and then to 14 hours in 2002.
In my mind, the reasons why computers are more and more widely used are as follows. First, computers can help us accomplish many tasks, including both work and study. With the advent of Internet, searching for information and contacting friends become just a click away. Besides, computers are becoming cheaper and cheaper – many university students can afford it.
The negative effects of computers are also clear. To begin with, computers may be out of order from time to time, and repairing them can be both expensive and time-consuming. Second, more and more students spend too much time playing video games or chatting online, which are both bad habits.
All in all, I should say the advantages outweigh the advantages. The key lies in whether we can make good use of it to enhance work and study.
My View on Staying Longer in University
Recently, more and more educators and common citizens suggest that universities and colleges should allow students to take a longer period to graduate. Personally, I fully agree with their proposal for the following reasons.
On the one hand, the ever-increasing pressure of study at the moment and job-hunting in the future may hinder the efficiency of many students. If a student wants to take his time to study all his subjects well, why don’t we give him the chance? On the other hand, many students want to put theory into practice through various methods, such as conducting social practice, traveling or joining the army. They should be allowed to resume their studies at their former universities when they come back. Finally, some students are permitted to change their majors at college and it is natural for them to graduate later.
In a word, I warmly welcome students’ staying longer in universities. In my mind, we should
satisfy the requests of the students as long as they are reasonable.
