[Summary] “How to be a good teacher?” I think it is not only my confusion but also lots of my young colleagues’ too. According to studying the old English teacher’s teaching experience, I know that it is not easy to be a good teacher, you should fully understand the characteristics of the child: their age, playing is their nature. We need do a lot of things to be a good teacher.

I could remember that English has been my favorite since I was in my junior high school. At that time I had a dream that one day I could become an English teacher. And my dream was fulfilled when I graduated from university. I was so idealistic that I dreamed of helping all my students to improve their ability of using English in a new and relaxing way. However, as time goes by, it all goes out my imagination. Facing all kinds of students and different trivial every day, I become more and more confused. “Am I a good English teacher?” “How could I become a good English teacher?” All these questions arise in my mind. “How to be a good teacher?” I think it is not only my confusion but also lots of my young colleagues’ too. According to studying the old English teacher’s teaching experience, I know that it is not easy to be a good teacher,

because to be a good teacher is required to have many qualities as follows.

At first, a good teacher must be a good personal quality such as being patient to tolerate the students who have made some mistakes, showing enthusiasm in class, being humorous, having a quick response to the immediate emergency, being open-minded, etc. Probably, the teachers with these personal qualities will attract students and be liked by them. Secondly, a good teacher must master all kinds of teaching skills; owning professional knowledge is not enough. In order to have this capability, a good teacher should acquire enough knowledge. On the one hand, he should acquire the wide knowledge of philosophy, psychology, education, culture, history, geography, etc. On the other hand, he must master much deeper theories in his research field. Apart from this knowledge, an English teacher should possess the necessary skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, among which speaking is of great importance. In addition, a good English teacher may have the means to activate his class and give students the opportunities to practice English. Only in this way can students use English and improve their communicative competence.

Thirdly, a good teacher should have the awareness of learning. We are in an information age, and the knowledge is changing rapidly. If a teacher doesn’t charge himself from time to time, his theory may be out of date,

and he may not keep the pace with the development of our society. At present, a teacher is required not only to know how to teach, but also to do research in his field. So, he should update his theory and know the newest one in the world.

Fourthly, a good teacher should have moral quality, that is to say, a good teacher should be a model and set a good example to his students and others. A good teacher will be a good citizen, for example, complying with the laws of our country and the rules of the school, offering seats on the bus, helping others, and so on. For a good teacher the most important moral is to love students and to love the course of teaching. As long as he has love for his profession, he may have enormous devotion for his students, and become an excellent teacher.

Finally, the most important thing a good English teacher has is able to do is to make his students kind-hearted ones who will not do harmful things to the society, and to make his students adapt to the quick development of the society. Besides, a good teacher is a friend who should believe in his students and a guide who can tell his students how to find the right way in the forest of knowledge. I think a good teacher is not only a nurse but also a director. What’s more, a good English teacher is the one who can inspire his students. And how you can inspire your students depends on who and what you are teaching. Your teaching strategies must be individualized according to the learning abilities and

willingness of your students. If your student is a little child, you should be more specific in the teaching process, telling your student everything he/she has to do.

In short, a good teacher should love children and respects them. They know the students’ needs well and never give up any of them. They keep on learning both the language and the teaching methodology. They are always creative, knowledgeable, talented and versatile. They are always optimistic and give students never-ending encouragement. They are always hardworking and helpful. They are complex thinkers and always make students feel fresh. I am now chasing all of the good English teachers’ footprints and I am full of confidence.
