摘要：The invention comprises (1) 6-methyl-3b :16a :17a -trihydroxypregn-5-en-20-one; and (2) a process for the preparation of steroids of the formula (where R is

hydrogen or a methyl group) which comprises reacting steroids of the formula (where R1is hydrogen or an aliphatic acyl radical of at most 8 carbon atoms) with analkoxycarbonylhydrazine and an alkanoic acid of 1 to 3 carbon atoms to give the

corresponding 20-alkoxycarbonyl hydrazones of 16a -alkanoyloxy17a -hydroxy-pregnen-20-ones, saponifying these to give the 16a : 17a -dihydroxy derivatives (which

saponification also removes any acyl group in the 3-position) and hydrolysing these togive the required products. The saponification is desirably effected by heating withethanolic or methanolic sodium or potassium hydroxide and the hydrolysis by treatmentwith a mixture of aqueous acetic acid and not less than 1.2 molar proportions of pyruvicacid. Examples are given.
