You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below. 1. 现在有不少家长送孩子参加各种艺术班 2. 对这种做法有人表示支持,也有人并不赞成 3. 我认为…… Should Parents Send Their Kids to Art Classes? Step 1:仿写练习:【“现象阐释”为例】 Exercise 1 Due Attention Should Be Paid to Spelling 1. 如今不少学生在英语学习中不注重拼写; 2. 出现这种现象的原因; 3. 针对这种现象,我认为…… As Francis Bacon put it, “Writing makes an exact man.” Or, simply put it, anyone who cannot express himself clearly and exactly can hardly become sophisticated and mature. Unfortunately, not everyone can spell correctly in his writing, let alone precise expression. What has given to the prevalence of misspelling? The answer lies in the following two factors – “carelessness” and “overdependence”. Illustrations are listed as follows. After writing an essay, a student may never check it out, because he only cares about finishing the task but pay no attention to the quality of his writing. Or, when writing a paper, a student may entirely depend on the function of spelling-correction of certain software, thus losing his own ability to spell correctly.

As college men, we should not merely blame this inability, but bear in mind that for everyone, including us, writing precisely was, is and will always be an element of our ability. Therefore, we have the duty to recite and use words correctly and pay due attention to our spelling.

Exercise 2

Due Attention Should Be Paid to the Study of Chinese

1. 如今在不少学生中出现了忽视中文学习的现象; 2. 出现这种现象的原因; 3. 针对这种现象,我认为……

No one can forget the motto, “A culture is the soul of a nation, while a language is the soul of the culture.” That is, anyone who has not a good command of his native language can hardly know much about the traditional culture of his nation. Unfortunately, not every Chinese student care about studying his native language, not to mention the glorious eastern culture.

What kills off our passion for studying Chinese? The answer may be “too much emphasis on foreign languages and practical skills”. To illustrate, every morning, we can see students reading English essays aloud, because they are under the pressure of CET, rather than “CCT” (“College Chinese Test” for short). Moreover, every evening, we find students swarming into computer lectures or accounting lessons, sparing not even a minutes for the study of our native language. Is Chinese fading from campuses and the historical stage? As college men, we should not merely lament this tragedy, but root it in our mind that Chinese, be it emphasized or not, was, is, and will always be the soul of our culture. Therefore, we have the duty to pay due attention this our native language and have a good master of it.

Exercise 3 Due Attention Should Be Paid to Mutual Help 1. 互助至关重要,但乐于助人者越来越少; 2. 出现这种现象的原因; 3. 针对这种现象,我认为…… No one can deny the simple truth, “Evolution makes human, but mutual assistance makes human society.” Or, put another way, anyone, without help from others, can hardly lead a normal life. Unfortunately, not everyone is willing to offer help even if it is necessary. What has killed off the enthusiasm for helping others? The answers may be “selfishness” and “cowardliness”. The following cases are familiar and convincing. Seeing a pregnant lady standing in a bumpy bus no one stands up to leave her a seat, caring only about his own comfort and ease. Glancing at the wounded groaning in a car accident, few bystanders take him to a hospital, for fear of getting involved into the trouble. As college men, we should not merely lament this social problem, but bear in mind that everyone, including us, was, is, and will always be in need of help from others. Therefore, we have the duty to lend a helping hand to build up the social atmosphere of great harmony.

(S1)It has been a hot topic for a long time whether online games are a blessing or curse for us. Those who are in favor of this internet-based entertainment deem it as not only a source of joy, pleasure, and happiness, but also the training for quick response.

(S2)They may be right about the value of these games, but fail to take into account the fact that online games do bring some negative influences to youngsters. Cases to prove this point are abundant: some students lacking self-discipline are too much indulged in these games so that their academic performances are shockingly low; besides, some of them spend most of their spare time in an internet-café, without regular meal, sleep, and physical exercise, leading to poor health.

(S3)From my point of view, online games would be a wonderful way to relax ourselves, if we schedule our leisure time reasonably. However, when they interfere too much with our living and schooling, it is advisable for us to give them up at once. 【升级版本】

Stuck by a fishbone in the throat, we may be awkward. Asked whether online games are beneficial or harmful to us, we may feel even awkward. Many students, mostly optimists, advocate that these games are source of joy, pleasure and happiness. “Only work no play makes Jack a dull boy,” says an excellent classmate, “these games are the direct cause of inspiring life.”

However, one man’s meat can be another’s poison! This welfare of these optimists – online games – can be a millstone, grinding off the precious time of youngsters who are lack of self-discipline. Indeed, some of them spend most of their spare time in an internet-café, without regular meal, sleep, and physical exercise, leading to poor health. What’s more, overindulgence in these games may deprive them of their chances to read, to learn, to think and to grow. As to me, I am certainly a big fan of some games, but I will never view them as the whole picture of my campus life. I am convinced that, all of us, freshmen or senior, excellent or just normal, should have a right attitude toward online games: they are the source of pleasure, but the source of happiness should not be confined to them.

pervasive: gaining admission into a college by the effort of parents, obtaining a job with the assistance of family, or even getting married with the support of relatives. Is the help from kin necessary? Is the kin really helping them?

Prevailing among students, this trend of overdependence has earned itself the crown: maximizing the profit of the family resources. Actually, behind the seemingly reasonable name lies its true face: their weakness. Students’ desire for assistance from families reflects their immature mind and inability to lead their own life. This inability prevents students from perfecting their personality and enhancing their ability to be self-made men.

This prevalence of overdependence can be put under control only when there are coordinate programs of offering them chances to organize their life affairs by themselves and to practice solving problems alone. Indeed, there should be a general awareness that students can develop healthily only when they are free from the shadow of unnecessary assistance from families.

Prevailing among students, this mis-belief in money has earned itself the crown: an realistic life-style. Actually, behind the seemingly reasonable name lies its true face: overemphasis on money. Students’ desire for wealth reflects their immature mind and unclear value of life. The inability to resist the temptation of seeking after money prevents students from enriching their knowledge and expanding their mind.

This prevalence of money worship can be put under control only when there are coordinate programs of imparting them correct concept and enabling them to experience success. Indeed, there should be a general awareness that students can develop healthily only when they are free from such money oriented distraction and enveloped by an atmosphere of academic competition.

Students’ Playing Online Games

1. 目前很多学生沉溺于网络游戏; 2. 沉溺于游戏的危害; 3. 作为学生,的看法?

【版本一】

Have you ever seen school boys “having a long battle” before a computer screen? Have you ever found school girls “planting flowers or vegetables” in their online yard? In students’ mind, playing these online games is merely daily occurrence. In teachers’ or parents’ eyes, however,

4

these games are E-opium, killing off youngsters’ precious time.

Admittedly, we may say “only work no play makes Jack a dull boy.” However, overindulgence in these E-games will definitely deprive students’ of their chances to read, to learn, and to grow. The following consequence is not unfamiliar but unpleasant: some students, attracted by online games, spend almost 10 hours per day, seeking pleasure from games, at the cost of their schoolwork, at the cost of their youth, and even at the cost of their life.

As a college student, I am aware that online games are indeed a source of pleasure, but the source of pleasure is not merely them. Wining a sports game, achieving an academic scholarship, or reading a classic may be a greater joy than playing a computer game.

【版本二】 Is there any young man who views it masculine to “have a long battle” before a computer screen? Is there any young lady who deems it a fashion to spend several hours “planting flower or vegetables in their online yard”? Indeed, this trend is prevailing on almost every university campus.

In just one generation, millions of young clays have stepped into an age of online entertaining, seeking pleasure from these amusing computer programs. Educators and social researcher may consider it an effective way to get students relaxed, but they, as well as all of us, also focus on the side effect: these acts hamper students’ personal development. Specifically, playing games in internet-cafés squanders not only parents’ hard-earned cash, but students’ precious youth-time as well. This squandering habit will definitely do harm to their self-perfection, thus leading to a miserable life.

In view of the destructive effects of playing online games, most of us cannot help advocating the school authorities to work out concrete rule and regulations to put an end to this trend. But that is a passive way and only works on some extreme cases. As entertainment is a necessary part of campus life, an applicable approach is as follows: more entertaining activities, concerning sports, art, and social practice, should be organized to distract students’ attention from digital games.

【旧辞新唱】 How to Deal With Online Games? 1. 目前很多学生沉溺于网络游戏; 2. 学校应该怎么做? 3. 学生自己应该怎么做?

Traditionally, students are supposed to concentrate on their schooling, but is that the case anymore? Actually, their living themes are no longer “textbooks and notebooks”. Currently, it is not unusual to see schoolboys spending a whole day having a long battle before a computer screen, and schoolgirls planting flower or vegetables in their online yard all day long.

Those acts are definitely detrimental. Therefore drastic measures should be taken before things get worse, of which the following one may be most effective: the school authorities should work out concrete rule and regulations to put an end to this trend. As young clays, some students cannot employ self-regulation as a power tool to get themselves out of the amusing island isolated from the real world. Therefore, school authorities have the duty to put control over these young victims.

However, that is a passive way and only works on some extreme cases. Therefore, control from school is not enough, and students should find ways to rescue themselves. As entertainment

is a necessary part of campus life, an applicable approach is as follows: more entertaining activities, concerning sports, art, and social practice, should be organized to distract students’ attention from digital games.

On Online Games

1. 有人认为网络游戏对学生有利; 2. 有人认为网络游戏对学生有害; 3. 你的看法

【版本一】

Stuck by a fish-bone in the throat, we may be awkward; asked whether online games are a blessing or curse, we may be even awkward. Some students – rarely diligent ones – claim that E-games make them refreshed. “Having battle before a computer every evening, I can shrug off all the stress from school work.” said a sophomore in Xi’an Jiao Tong University.

However, one man’s meat can be another’s poison. Opponents may hold the totally different view: this online amusement may kill of other students’ enthusiasm, ambition, and chances of personal development. Admittedly, we may say “only work no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Unfortunately, overindulgence in these E-games will definitely deprive students’ of their chances to read, to learn, and to grow.

As a college student, I am aware that online games are indeed a source of pleasure, but the source of pleasure is not merely them. Wining a sports game, achieving an academic scholarship, or reading a classic may be a greater joy than playing a computer game.

【版本二】 Almost every student knows this proverb: only work no play, makes Jack a dull boy. Indeed, in current years, it is not unusual for college students to seek pleasures from online games: schoolboys having a battle before a computer screen, and schoolgirls planting flower or vegetables in their online yard. These games make them refreshed. In the age of online entertaining, educators do consider it an effective way to get students relaxed, but they, as well as all of us, also focus on the side effect: these acts hamper students’ personal development. This squandering habit will definitely do harm to their self-perfection, thus leading to a miserable life. Although some people frankly declare their distaste for online entertainment, we can never go to an extreme. As entertainment is an indispensible part of campus life, an applicable approach is as follows: in addition to online games, more activities, concerning sports, art, and social practice, should be organized to distract students’ attention from digital entertainment.

倡议书Letter of Advocating

Dear friends,

I am writing, on behalf of the student union, to talk us out of playing online-games too often. Computer game, so-called E-opium, is like a millstone, killing off our precious time. To make things worse, this opium deprives us the enthusiasm of reading, learning and discovering.

In front of us lie two steps to fight against the lure of E-games. Firstly, we are supposed to be aware of the influence these games exert on us: occasionally beneficial, but mostly harmful. That is to say, from them, we obtain joy and pleasure at the expense of valuable youth time. After that, we should resort to a decisive countermeasure: to develop healthy new hobbies, no matter it is photographing or physical exercising, to replace the destructive old one. Knowing about the detrimental effect and seeing corresponding countermeasures, how can we continue to stand by doing nothing? Let’s crack this hard nut! Anyone who would like to join the campaign, please sign your name on this poster! Thank you very much! Yours sincerely, Li Ming

【图表阐释】 Extravagant Spending 1400120010008006004002000200020052010

Monthly Average Expenditure of a College Student (Yuan per Month)

【第一段版本一】

As is exhibited by the column-chart, students’ monthly expenditure has been on a rise. To be specific, there had been a gentle accumulation in the amount of average expenses in the first five years, which was followed by the dramatic rise of the latter half decade. Clearly, an expanding number of students no longer cherish the virtue of thrift.

【第一段版本二】 Emerging from the column-chart is a noticeable / shocking / astonishing / alarming / amazing / inspiring / encouraging change that the monthly expenses of students kept increasing in the past decade. Specifically, the average expenditure stayed low in 2000, approximately 400 Yuan per month. However, till 2010 the number has shot to about 1400, which is twice that of 2005. Evidently, students in mounting numbers have forgotten the virtue of thrift.

【第一段版本三】

Echoed by this column-chart is a significant change: students are spending an increasing amount of money for their school life every month. As we can see, the first five years witnessed the marginal increase of the average expenses, from 400 Yuan per month to 640. However, that is not the end! By the year of 2010, the number has soared to 1400. Clearly, thrift has become a word of the past on students’ mind.

【第二段】

The explanation of this trend involves these two factors: “ever-increasing CPI” and “the lack of thrift”. Admittedly, with the development of social-economy, families may spend more money, for better diet, for better housing, or for better education. However, that is not the only cause! It is the fading sense of thrift that leads to this situation.

【第三段】

From my point of view, CPI is not under the control of our students, but the sense of thrift is. Therefore, as pure customers, we should limit our daily expenses into daily necessities, rather than luxuries, to counterbalance the ever increasing prices.
