DESCRIPTION

ThePTN04050Aisanadjustableoutput,positive-to-negative,integratedswitchingregulator.Innewdesigns,itshouldbeconsideredinplaceofthePT5020seriesofpositive-to-negativeintegratedswitchingregulatorproducts.ThePTN04050Aissmallerandlighterthanitspredecessor,withimprovedelectricalperformancecharacteristics,whileoperatingoverawiderinputvoltagerange,withanadjustableoutputvoltage.Thecaseless,double-sidedpackagealsoexhibitsimprovedthermalcharacteristics,andiscompatiblewithTI'sroadmapforRoHSandlead-freecompliance.

Operatingfromawide-inputvoltagerangeof2.9 V to7 V,thePTN04050Aprovideshigh-efficient,positive-to-negativevoltageconversionforloadsofupto6 W.Theoutputvoltageissetusingasingleexternalresistor,andmaybesettoanyvaluewithintherange,–15Vto–3.3 V.

ThePTN04050Afeaturesincludeon/offinhibit,undervoltagelockout,over-currentprotection,andissuitedforawidevarietyofgeneral-purposeapplicationsthatoperateoff3.3-Vor5-Vinput.

ThecommongroundconnectionfortheVIandVOpowerconnections.ItisalsothereferencefortheVOAdjustcontrolinputs.

Thepositiveinputvoltagepowernodetothemodule,whichisreferencedtocommonGND.

TheInhibitpinisanopen-collector/drain(non-TTL),negativelogicinputthatisreferencedtoGND.

Applyingalow-levelgroundsignaltothisinputdisablesthemodule'soutput.WhentheInhibitcontrolisactive-low,theinputcurrentdrawnbytheregulatorissignificantlyreduced.IftheInhibitpinisleftopen-circuit,themoduleproducesanoutputvoltagewheneveravalidinputsourceisapplied.ThePTN04050AInhibitcontrolcircuitrymustnotbesharedwithanothermodule.NeverconnectaresistorbetweentheInhibitpinandanyothervoltagereferenceorGND.

A1%resistormustbeconnectedbetweenpin4andpin1tosettheoutputvoltageofthemodule.Ifleftopen-circuit,theoutputvoltagedefaultsto–1.79V,whichisbeyondtherecommendedoperatingrange.Theset-pointrangeis–15Vto–3.3V.Thetemperaturestabilityoftheresistorshouldbe100ppm/°C(orbetter).Thestandardresistorvalueforanumberofcommonoutputvoltagesisprovidedintheapplicationinformation.

AresistormustbeconnecteddirectlybetweentheVOAdjustcontrol(pin4)andGND(pin1)tosettheoutputvoltageofthemodule.Theadjustmentrangeisfrom–15Vto–3.3V.Ifpin4isleftopen,theoutputvoltagedefaultsto–1.79V,whichisbeyondtherecommendedoperatingrange.

Table1givesthestandardresistorvalueforanumberofcommonvoltages,alongwiththeactualoutputvoltagethatthevalueproduces.Forotheroutputvoltages,theresistorvaluecaneitherbecalculatedusingEquation1,orbyselectingfromtherangeofvaluesgiveninTable2.Figure15showstheplacementoftherequiredresistor.

Forapplicationswithloadtransients(suddenchangesinloadcurrent),theregulatorresponseimproveswithadditionalcapacitance.Additionalelectrolyticcapacitorsshouldbelocatedclosetotheloadcircuit.Thesecapacitorsprovidedecouplingoverthefrequencyrange,2kHzto150kHz.Aluminumelectrolyticcapacitorsaresuitableforambienttemperaturesabove0°C.Foroperationbelow0°C,tantalumorOs-Con-typecapacitorsarerecommended.Whenusingoneormorenonceramiccapacitors,thecalculatedequivalentESRshouldbenolowerthan10mΩ(17mΩusingthemanufacturer'smaximumESRforasinglecapacitor).AlistofrecommendedcapacitorsandvendorsareidentifiedinTable3.CeramicCapacitors

Above150kHz,theperformanceofaluminumelectrolyticcapacitorsbecomeslesseffective.Tofurtherreducethereflectedinputripplecurrent,ortheoutputtransientresponse,multilayerceramiccapacitorsmustbeadded.CeramiccapacitorshavelowESR,andtheirresonantfrequencyishigherthanthebandwidthoftheregulator.Whenplacedattheoutput,theircombinedESRisnotcriticalaslongasthetotalvalueofceramiccapacitancedoesnotexceed200µF.TantalumCapacitors

Tantalum-typecapacitorsmaybeusedatboththeinputandtheoutput,andarerecommendedforapplicationswheretheambientoperatingtemperaturecanbelessthan0°C.TheAVXTPS,Sprague593D/594/595,andKemetT495/T510/T520capacitorsseriesaresuggestedovermanyothertantalumtypesduetotheirratedsurge,powerdissipation,andripplecurrentcapability.Asacaution,manygeneral-purposetantalumcapacitorshaveconsiderablyhigherESR,reducedpowerdissipation,andlowerripplecurrentcapability.Thesecapacitorsarealsolessreliableastheyhavelowerpowerdissipationandsurgecurrentratings.TantalumcapacitorsthatdonothaveastatedESRorsurgecurrentratingarenotrecommendedforpowerapplications.WhenspecifyingOs-Conandpolymer-tantalumcapacitorsfortheoutput,theminimumESRlimitisencounteredwellbeforethemaximumcapacitancevalueisreached.CapacitorTable

Thecapacitortable,Table3,identifiesthecharacteristicsofcapacitorsfromvariousvendorswithacceptableESRandripplecurrent(rms)ratings.Therecommendednumberofcapacitorsrequiredatboththeinputandoutputbusesisidentifiedforeachcapacitortype.Thisisnotanextensivecapacitorlist.Capacitorsfromothervendorsareavailablewithcomparablespecifications.Thoselistedareforguidance.ThermsratingandESR(at100kHz)arecriticalparametersnecessarytoensurebothoptimumregulatorperformanceandlongcapacitorlife.

Thetransientresponseofthedc/dcconverterhasbeencharacterizedusingaloadtransientwithadi/dtof1A/µs.Thetypicalvoltagedeviationforthisloadtransientisgiveninthedatasheetspecificationtableusingtherequiredvalueofoutputcapacitance.Asthedi/dtofatransientisincreased,theresponseofaconverter'sregulationcircuitultimatelydependsonitsoutputcapacitordecouplingnetwork.Thisisaninherentlimitationofanydc/dcconverteroncethespeedofthetransientexceedsitsbandwidthcapability.Ifthetargetapplicationspecifiesahigherdi/dtorlowervoltagedeviation,therequirementcanonlybemetwithadditionaloutputcapacitordecoupling.Inthesecases,specialattentionmustbepaidtothetype,value,andESRofthecapacitorsselected.
