Everyone who lives in San Francisco knows that earthquakes are common in the Bay Area—and they can be devastating. One hundred years ago this month, for example, a major quake destroyed about 28,000 buildings and killed hundreds, perhaps thousands of people. The ground shook for nearly a minute, and buildings burst into flame. The fires burned for days. Residents now wonder when the next \"Big One\" will strike. It's bound to happen someday. At least seven active fault lines run through the San Francisco area. Faults are places where pieces of Earth's crust slide past each other. When these pieces slip, the ground shakes.
To prepare for that day, scientists are using new techniques to reanalyze the 1906 earthquake and predict how bad the damage might be when the next one happens.
One new finding about the 1906 quake is that the San Andreas fault split apart, or ruptured, faster than scientists had assumed at the time. During small earthquakes, faults rupture at about 2.7 kilometers per second. During bigger quakes, however, recent observations show that ruptures can happen at rates faster than 3.5 kilometers per second.
Looking ahead, scientists are trying to predict when the next major quake will occur. Records show that earthquakes were common before 1906. Since then, there has been something of a lull. Patterns in the data, however, suggest that the probability of a major earthquake striking the Bay Area before 2032 is at least 62 percent.
New buildings in San Francisco have to follow strict codes that stabilize them against future quakes. Still, more than 84 percent of the city's buildings are old, weak, and vulnerable. Analyses suggest that another massive earthquake would cause extensive damage.
People who live there today tend to feel safe because San Francisco has remained pretty quiet for a while. According to the new research, however, it's not a matter of \"if\" the Big One will hit. It's just a matter of when. 36. What do the residents want to know ___________now. A. what the 1906 quake affected us.
B. how People then dealt with earthquake. C. why the 1906 quake only struck this area. D. when the next earthquake will happen. 37.What about the 1906 quake?
A. It destroyed about 28,000 stores.
B. It killed less than one hundred people. C. People could feel floor shake.
D. It caused flood and drowned buildings.
38. Why do people who live there today tend to feel safe? A. No major quake happened for a while.
B. People are sure that one earthquake occur. C. Scientists comforted a great many people.
D. People take measures to fight against earthquakes.
39.What can be inferred from the underlined sentence ”however, it's not a matter of \"if\" the Big One will hit. It's just a matter of when.” ?
A. Another massive earthquake would cause extensive damage. B. Another massive earthquake would cause people to prepare.
C. Another earthquake is sure to occur but no one knows when. D. Another earthquake is bound to be escaped.
40.Which the best title according to the passage? A. A Great Quake Coming?
B. The effects of another earthquake C. The speed of earthquake D. The extensive damage in 1906.

It was June 15, and in two days I would be turning thirty. I feared that my best years were now behind me.
I often go to the gym before going to work. Every morning I would see my friend Nicholas at the gym. He was seventy-nine years old. As I greeted Nicholas on this particular day, he looked at me in a strange way. I told him I was feeling anxious about turning thirty. I wondered how I would look back on my life once I reached Nicholas's age, so I asked him, \"What was the best time of your life?\"
Without hesitation, Nicholas replied, “Well, Joe, this is my special answer to your special question. My father took me to see the picture Mona Lisa when I was very young. Thinking of her smile, I believe I am the best even if I had trouble. it was the best time of your life. ”
“When I was a child and sometimes I was scolded by my parents, I thought of her smile, I smiled, that was the best time of my life.”
“When I got my first job and got paid for my efforts, I thank for her smile, that was the best time of my life.”
“When I met my wife and fell in love, I believe wife's smile is Mona Lisa's smile, that was the best time of my life.”
“When I was a young father, watching my children grow up, that was the best time of my life.”
“And now, Joe, I am seventy-nine years old. I have my health, I feel good and I am in love with my wife just as I was when we first met. This is the best time of my life.” 41. Which day do you think is Joe’s birthday?
A. June 13. B. June 15. C. June 17 D. June 19 42. According to the passage, my friend Nicholas_________. A. got married another one again
B. was more likely to feel sad when he was older. C. was looked after only by his mother. D. was inspired by Mona Lisa's smile.
43. Which of the periods was the best time of Nicholas’s life?
A. His childhood B. His school days C. His old age D. All the time 44. What did the the picture Mona Lisa mainly give Nicholas? A. Health B. Wealth C. Confidence D. Love 45. Why did Nicholas look at me in a strange way.? A. He always looked at me in this way. B. Something was wrong with his eye. C. He noticed I was worried D. He looked down upon others. 由原文第一段原句“It was June 15, and in two days I would be turning thirty.”
原文最后一段 “ …I am in love with my wife just as I was when we first met.”
尤其是第三段的“Thinking of her smile, I believe I am the best even if I had trouble. it was the best time of your life.” 由原文第二段原句“As I greeted Nicholas on this particular day,”可以推断,

Two traveling angels(天使)stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guest room. Instead the angels were given a space in the cold basement. To them, night is very important, they want to know how to prepare their bed.
As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied... \"Things aren't always what they seem\".
The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night's rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field.
The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel \"how could you have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him,\" she accused. \"The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let their cow die.\"
\"Things aren't always what they seem,\" the older angel replied. \"When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave her the cow instead. Things aren't always what they seem.\" 46. 47.B 细节理解题,从第三段看出,穷人夫妇生活贫困,拿出自己仅有的少量饭给天使吃,腾出自己的床给天使住。
49.C 词义理解题,从\"how could you have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him,\" she accused. \"The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let their cow die.\"特别是she accused说明小天使很生气,对老天使的看法表示不满。 50. Things aren't always what they seem道理

Today our school organized an activity called “Take care of our lives, hand in hand with Aids children”. At 8:30 am, we volunteers gathered at the school gate and started our bike trip, which took us about one hour and a half. Soon after we got to the Red Cross Hospital, where most Aids children are staying, we began to have close chats with them to see how their life is going, and then we danced happily together. Having got to know them so well, we presented our gifts, took lots of photos and ate lunch together before we came back. I feel very great to see the Aids children so happy when they are not ignored and taken good care of.
